Women of Sin follows the journey of Karima Nadir, a grassroots activist and single mother in Morocco, where Article 490 of the Penal Code still criminalizes extramarital sex. Judged “immoral” by society, Karima refuses to back down. She defends other women. At home, she cares for her mother and raises her son alone. For him, she wants to disprove prejudices and show him, by example, that shame does not lie with them. Through her personal activism and the KIF MAMA KIF BABA collective, Karima supports single mothers prosecuted for “public indecency” as well as rape survivors who fear being punished themselves by the justice system. As the country embarks on a historic reform of the Moudawana (Family Code), Karima is summoned to Parliament and before the Royal Commission to give voice to those who are never heard. The film captures a pivotal moment in her struggle and poses the question: whom does the law protect, and at what cost?
After studying journalism and political science, Noufissa Charaï joined France 24 in 2013, where she produced international reports and coordinated programs, including THE DEBATE. She also worked as a Paris correspondent for the Huffington Post Maghreb and L’Observateur du Maroc et d’Afrique. WOMEN OF SIN is her first feature-length documentary.
