Mahdia, Tunisia. Fatma and her daughters, Najeh and Waffeh, work as “Machtat,” traditional wedding musicians. While the eldest, divorced, tries to remarry to escape the authority of her brothers, the youngest seeks a way to separate from her violent spouse.
After studying cinema at Paris 3-Sorbonne-Nouvelle, Sonia BEN SLAMA directed her first feature-length documentary Tout est writes in 2015. Her second film, Machtat, also shot in Tunisia, was in international competition at Visions du Réel (Nyon) and at ACID Cannes 2023. She is currently developing a new documentary project 316 North Main Street, shot in the United States.
